Bertie Bassett, voted the most popular scarecrow

A scarecrow festival this weekend provided a lot of fun, and raised a good sum of money towards refurbishing the children’s play area.

The scarecrows were clever and funny – and there were lots of them, a credit to the talent of their makers. People had planned for weeks, hoarding useful materials, and developing witty ideas. Many were team efforts, and had been a long time in the making.

The weather was kind to us. After torrential rain on Friday, we had almost no rain over the weekend. In this year of floods, how lucky was that?!

Large quantities of cakes were baked, served and eaten, and lots of prizes won on the tombola.

The festival was a triumph of everyone in the village pulling together. There were so many ways that people could contribute: marshalling traffic, baking a cake, making a scarecrow, donating a tombola prize, advertising the event, manning a stall on the day, buying a raffle ticket, and so on and so on. Even eating a cake or voting for your favourite scarecrow was a contribution to the day.

Therefore, there was something for everyone. The event provided good entertainment and the camaraderie of teamwork. And we’re all very pleased with how much money was raised for the children’s play park.

Here are some pictures of the stars of the day: the Scarecrows.
