Appleton Wiske Scarecrow Festival
Appleton Wiske Scarecrow festival this year was bigger and better than ever. Rain on Saturday sent everyone scurrying for parasols and gazebos to protect their creations – but Sunday was lovely and sunny, and the village was full of both locals and visitors enjoying the scarecrows, crafts, refreshments and entertainments.

My favourite part of the festival is that there are no rules about what people can make – they can make any subject they like, which results in a fantastic variety. Visitors clearly enjoyed themselves too: lots of people wandered in the sunshine and lingered to enjoy refreshments, crafts, and the play bus. The hard working volunteers who served teas, organised crafts, games, and a plant stall, will hopefully be rewarded with funds to spend on fitness equipment for the village School. It’s an example of villagers helping to improve the quality of life in their village – and giving people a good day out in the process. It’s the Yorkshire Way: everybody wins.
