Julie Haigh, Christmas Fairy maker, Dalesman Dec 2014

For the December Dalesman Magazine, I visited Julie Haigh’s Christmas Fairy Factory in West Yorkshire, where Christmas Fairies are born.

A Christmas Fairy is the finishing touch for many a family’s Christmas tree.  And in a magical attic near Holmfirth in West Yorkshire, Christmas never stops, as Julie Haigh spends all year making Yorkshire Christmas fairies.  Supported by her ‘Fairy Godmothers’ – her Mother and Mother-in-law, Julie’s Christmas fairies wing their way all over the world.

Julie, who named her work room The Fabulous Fairy Factory, says, “I put Christmas wishes in while I’m making them.  I love Christmas anyway, but for me, Christmas never ends.”

“Each one I make, the people say a bit about their tree, maybe it’s traditional, or modern, and somehow, I instinctively get a feeling for them.  It’s the tree fairy that’s going to be handed down through generations: people will say, this is our Christmas Fairy.”

“I get such pleasure from making them, I hope they bring a bit of magic and sparkle.”

Understanding other families’ Christmases means, says Julie, “Customers have become friends.  Maybe it’s because they’re people who like fairies, they’re a nice type of person, and I just like talking to them.”
